Streaky Bay Jetty Remediation Works to Commence

The District Council of Streaky Bay is pleased to announce its support for the Department of Infrastructure and Transport in undertaking essential remediation works at the iconic Streaky Bay Jetty. As part of the SA Jetties Renewal Program, these works aim to significantly enhance the structural integrity and extend the lifespan of this beloved landmark by at least 30 years.

The Streaky Bay Jetty, a 340-meter-long icon, is not only a key tourist attraction but also a vital facility for our local community, including commercial and recreational fishers. The jetty pool, a shark-proof swimming enclosure active since 1936, and the vessel berthing and mooring facilities underscore its importance to our town.

In early 2024, structural assessments and investigations identified the necessary remediation works, which are scheduled to commence in September 2024 and be completed by the second quarter of 2025.

Key Aspects of the Remediation Works:

  • Replacement of structural timber piles with steel piles.
  • Replacement of decayed timber structures.
  • Upgrades to berthing and mooring structures with additional piles and rubber fenders at the sea end of the jetty.
  • Installation of new safety ladders for easier onboarding and offloading to and from berthed vessels.
  • Addition of new resting benches adjacent to the jetty shelter.
  • Extension of handrails where needed.

The new berthing and mooring structures will accommodate vessels up to 70 tonnes, meeting Marine Facilities Standards and ensure that the Jetty will continue to maintain use by local industry.

Additionally, the District Council of Streaky Bay will be retaining some of the timbers from the project for future use in community projects, preserving a piece of our local history and ensuring that the legacy of the jetty continues to benefit our community.

Impact on Jetty and Pool Access:

To ensure the safety of our community and contractors, the jetty will be temporarily closed during the construction period. This includes marine vessels, which will not be able to berth at the jetty. Alternative berthing and refuelling options will be available at Thevenard or Venus Bay.

Despite these temporary closures, the District Council of Streaky Bay is committed to minimizing disruptions by:

  • Keeping the Streaky Bay Jetty Platform open throughout the construction period.
  • Supporting the closure of the jetty pool by placing extra sand on the beach underneath the jetty platform to ensure swimming at the location can continue and exploring options to extend the opening hours of the school pool.
  • Ensuring key events, such as the Family Fish Day and New Year's Eve fireworks, will not be affected.
  • Making efforts to partially open the jetty and jetty pool over the Christmas and New Year period, ensuring community enjoyment during the festive season.

It is expected that Haslam Jetty remediation works will occur concurrently with the Streaky Bay remediation works. This synchronized effort will maximize resource efficiency.

Meet the Project Team:

The works project team will be in Streaky Bay at the jetty shelter to discuss the works and answer any questions. Drop by anytime during the following sessions:

  • Tuesday 16 July 2024, 4pm - 6pm
  • Wednesday 17 July 2024, 9am - 11am

We understand the temporary inconvenience, but these necessary works will significantly enhance the safety, functionality, and overall experience of the Streaky Bay Jetty, benefiting our community for decades to come. Stay tuned for more detailed updates as they become available.
