What began as a vision to replace ageing tennis courts has grown into something much bigger – a thriving community sporting precinct, built on years of collaboration, determination, and community spirit.
Several years ago, the Streaky Bay Tennis Club recognised that its courts on Montgomerie Terrace were deteriorating and in need of replacement. At the same time, Council was exploring opportunities to consolidate local sporting facilities.
Recognising the opportunity, Tennis Club Treasurer and Council employee Sandra Brice, for the Tennis Club, prepared (as a Tennis Club Volunteer) a successful grant application to relocate and rebuild the courts at the Streaky Bay Oval Precinct, moving them from the centre of town to co-locate with Basketball and Netball at the Streaky Bay Oval Precinct.
With Council's encouragement and support, the project became a true community effort. Local electricians, plumbers, builders, and volunteers generously contributed their skills and time, and Council provided machinery/rubble and completed the subbase for the new courts.
Council Executive team members Sandra Brice and Penny Williams also played key roles in project managing the works, working alongside volunteers and community groups to overcome challenges, raise additional funds and bring the project to life.

The relocation of the tennis courts sparked a series of further improvements, including new changerooms for the West Coast Hawks Football Club, followed by a new sporting complex building and bowling greens. Council successfully secured grant funding for these developments, with local businesses, community groups and volunteers once again contributing significantly through in-kind support.
Over the years, the Complex has continued to grow and evolve, with improvements including new goalposts, resurfacing of the multi-court facility and, most recently, the Streaky Bay Oval Lighting Project.
The new lighting system, officially celebrated with the first night game on 30 May 2026, represents another significant milestone for the community.
Once again, collaboration was at the heart of its success. Council's Penny Williams dedicated countless volunteer hours outside of her Council role, to research funding opportunities, preparing grant applications, and securing financial support.
Local electrician Mark Dolling also played an important role in the early planning and scoping of the project. He, alongside other local tradespeople, generously contributed their time and professional expertise, providing valuable in-kind labour.
In recognising Penny's contribution, the Streaky Bay & Districts Community Complex shared:
"𝘏𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘥 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺."
Together with the efforts of the Sporting Complex committee, funding partners, local businesses, contractors and volunteers, the project has delivered a modern lighting system that will support sport, community events, and greater use of the facilities for years to come.

These facilities are more than just sporting infrastructure. They're places where friendships are formed, communities come together and future generations can thrive.
