Revised Beach Speed Limits for Safety
As we gear up for summer, South Australian beaches will implement new speed limits for enhanced safety measures. Starting this season, a revised default speed limit of 40km/h will be in effect. Within 50m of pedestrians, the speed limit will be 25km/h unless otherwise specified.
Following a six-week educational period, amendments to the Road Traffic Act 1961 will come into force, introducing demerit point deductions and fines for speeding motorists on designated beach areas.
These changes are a direct result of the State Government's Road Safety Action Plan 2023-25, shaped by an extensive review of beach speed limits earlier this year. An overwhelming 80% of the public endorsed a reduced default speed limit, predominantly in favour of 40km/h, with 25km/h within 100m of pedestrians.
Extensive consultations involving SAPOL, the community, councils, and experts have led to a unanimous decision. The adjusted limit of 25km/h will be applicable specifically when motorists are within 50m of pedestrians.
Between 2017 and 2021, there were 29 reported beach crashes, resulting in one fatality, 15 serious injuries, and 13 minor injuries, with speed being a significant contributing factor.
We urge everyone to stay informed and drive responsibly for a safer and enjoyable beach experience.
