The District Council of Streaky Bay plays an important role in supporting the community to respond to their own health and wellbeing needs where they live, work, learn and play. Broadly this role includes: the provisions of information and programs that allow people to participate in and contribute to community life, maintaining and creating healthy built and natural environments, protecting the community from public and environmental health risks and the creation of systems and structures that support public health.

Councils also have a role in influencing the quality and distribution of resources that ensure that everyone in the community, regardless of socioeconomic status can improve their wellbeing.

The purpose of the Community Health and Wellbeing Strategic Plan is to address the unique health challenges faced by this isolated, rural community, aiming to enhance overall wellbeing through improved accessibility to healthcare services, infrastructure, and preventive health initiatives. Given the barriers identified—such as outdated facilities, limited healthcare access, and a lack of dedicated spaces for youth—the plan is focused on building sustainable healthcare resources that reduce reliance on distant towns, increase support for mental health services, and foster a healthier, more connected community.

By aligning with the State and Regional Public Health Plan and leveraging partnerships with Preventive Health SA, the Council seeks to fulfill its role in creating a liveable, resilient community where all residents can thrive. The plan outlines strategic priorities to provide accessible healthcare, encourage physical and social activities, and develop inclusive spaces that promote both personal and communal wellbeing. This proactive approach intends to alleviate long-term healthcare costs by focusing on preventive measures, enhancing community infrastructure, and fostering social cohesion.
