Streaky Bay Race Day
The Streaky Bay Racing Club Inc is always excited about the annual races to be held annually. The Club plans a day where ardent race goers and the 'once a year' patrons can enjoy a day of fun and good racing.
A free shuttle bus runs to and from Streaky Bay and the race-course, as we would like people to enjoy themselves without the need to 'drink and drive'.
Recent extensions and upgrades to the bar and TAB area ensure people can have a bet and a drink in pleasant surroundings. A newly refurbished building was placed at the course for the Secretary, Stewards and jockeys in 2006. Plenty of shade and tables and chairs are set up at the course to make it more enjoyable for eating the superb local delights which usually include seafood (oysters and fish burgers), steak sandwiches, hot dogs and afternoon tea, and are available throughout the day.
Racing itself looks good with the Streaky Bay Cup heading our usual 6-race program. EP Racing, TRSA & SARCC will continue the series named in Bill Holland's honour and the W A (Bill) Holland Memorial Series will be conducted throughout Eyre Peninsula with the final being held at the Streaky Bay races. Details of the series is elsewhere in "Trackside" or visit the TRSA website - www.theracessa.com.au
Full betting on local and interstate races is available on the TAB and bookies will operate with Sky Channel coverage. The popular Punter's Club will be conducted by a well-known racing fanatic with expert assistance from others so their wealth of racing knowledge and horse racing contacts should ensure an enjoyable and hopefully a profitable day.
Families are encouraged to attend and the children will receive free ice cream and lollies throughout the day. Face painting and other fun activities are also planned. A new initiative in 2006 was the "Ladies Big Day Out" with the Club encouraging the fairer sex to come and kick their heels up. For those "game" to participate, they will receive an entry ticket, shuttle bus, race book, betting voucher, light lunch, champagne and chances to win many prizes (check race club for costs). In addition each lady, through the gate will be eligible for a free entry into cash draws and the Best Dressed will win prize money. A junior prize is also on offer for girls 15 years and under. Free betting vouchers can be won during the day and various other fun things are planned.
The weekend will kick off with the Calcutta at the Streaky Bay Community Hotel on Friday night, and with some top interstate races programmed this night promises to be a good start for all. A raffle will give those who don't get a horse another chance.
Following the races there will be entertainment at the Hotel. Win or lose during the day, it won't matter as you can have some fun at night to either celebrate or erase the punting choices. Meals are available.
The Streaky Bay Racing Club Inc has a proud history of racing over a period of more than 100 years, providing a relaxed atmosphere and an enjoyable day for visitors and locals alike.
If anyone is interested in coming to Streaky Bay for the races then consider coming early and staying longer to discover what this fantastic part of South Australia and Eyre Peninsula has to offer. Whether its fishing, swimming with sea lions, surfing, or just enjoying the great coastal scenery, you can be assured your extended stay would be worthwhile.
